On behalf of the Organising Committee, it is our immense pleasure to invite you to UPHGCon 2026 – the IIIrd Annual Conference of the Uttar Pradesh Hematology Group. The theme of this year’s conference is “Hematology: Classic & New”.
Kashi has been the cradle of Hematology in Uttar Pradesh. Hematology in this region took its birth at the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi in 1965 with the establishment of the Hematopathology section, Coagulation Laboratory and the Hemophilia Society. At that time, there were only three centres in India engaged in coagulation studies, and IMS, BHU was one of them. The Department of Pathology, IMS, BHU had the honour of organising the XXVIth Hematocon in 1985.
Subsequently, the Division of Adult and Pediatric Hematology and a dedicated Hemophilia Clinic were established, and the first Annual Conference of the UP Chapter of ISHTM was organised in 2006. Bone Marrow Transplantation and Stem Cell Research Unit was established in 2020 and has since been performing both adult and pediatric transplants. A 350-bedded Tata Cancer Centre is now fully functional outside BHU and caters to patients with hematological malignancies.
The Kashi Hematology Group was formally created on 29 June 2019 to act as a platform to organise academic meets in Hematology & to permit collaborative work. We have organised 22 academic meets in the last 10 years. Thus, we are organizing on an average two academic meets every year. We are regularly publishing our own newsletter & we have published seven issues of the newsletter. In fact, apart from ISHBT, we are the only Hematology Society in the country which is regularly publishing its own newsletter. Apart from this, we have published four books on various facets of Hematology & the fifth book is in the pipeline. We will be working to strengthen the U.P. Hematology Group at the State level & the ISHBT at the national level.
It is a matter of immense pride that the Kashi Hematology Group along together with the NAMS Cell of IMS, BHU, has been given an opportunity to organise the IIIrd Annual Conference of Uttar Pradesh Hematology Group. On 20.02.2026, we will have four pre-conference workshops on Karyotyping, NGS, FISH & Capillary Electrophoresis. Prof. Neeraj Arora, the renowned molecular hematopathologist has very kindly consented to hold the workshop on NGS. The Conference with deal with basic but important topics like CBC, approach to bleeding disorders, potpourri of pediatric marrow cases & will also deal with state-of-the-art topic like NGS, Current status of autologous transplant in Hematology & Thalassemia -Standards of care/trials .
Prof. Debdatta Basu, the master among Quiz Masters, will conduct the PG Quiz on Sunday. We are honoured to have Padma Shri Prof. Soniya Nityanand to deliver the A.K. Tripathi Oration Lecture and Prof. Debdatta Basu to deliver the Prof. Ashutosh Kumar Oration Lecture.
